Interview with Dimitris Kotronakis

Honorary Mention of 2011 International Web Concert Hall Competition

Dimitris Kotronakis (Guitar - Greece)

How and why did you begin to play the instrument?

My parents selected for me! I was only seven and I had no idea about classical guitar.

Where were you born and where do you live now?

I was born in Heraklion in Creta island – Greece. I live in Athens - Greece

What period music do you enjoy playing the most and why?

I love Baroque music, I truly enjoy performing Bach’s music, however my instrument itself is limited for executing such repertoire. Anyway, I play many different styles, but I focus more on contemporary music, composed by guitarists-composers.

What was the musical composition that changed your life?

Ciaccona by J. S. Bach. I have been working on it, performing it for many years, but I am still discovering the new elements.

Who are your teachers?

I actually had only one teacher in my life. I began studying the guitar with Vassilis Kanaras and later on, I continued my degree study under his guidance. I also had two years of lessons with Costas Cotsiolis.

Do you teach? If so, where?  Yes I do. I teach at the “International Conservatory of Athens” and the “Panharmonio Conservatory of Athens”.

How do you prepare yourself on the day of performance? I don’t practice at all on that day. I give myself a good rest and just warm up my fingers for an half hour before the concert.

How much or often do you practice basic (tone production, articulation, etc.)? I practice basics every day. However, I am not doing any particular exercise; I am working all basic elements that are related to the repertoire I work on.

How do you select repertoire for your concerts? I try to look for pieces that are rarely performed in solo guitar concerts. I prefer contemporary pieces from guitarist-composers, or arrangements that I have made.

In your opinion, what is your strength in your playing?

I don’t like to speak about my musical achievements; this is something that critics should discuss about. I can only rave of my technique, which is kind of unique in the guitar world.

In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a good performer?

The one who affects the listeners. If you manage to move the people and stir their soul, then, you are a good performer... it does not matter if you make mistakes.

Do you have any upcoming concerts? Monterrey – Mexico Guitar Festival, April 6th and Ixtlahuaca – Mexico Guitar Festival, April 8th

On be half of the Web Concert Hall, we would like to thank you for your time and we wish all the success.
