2005 International Web Concert Hall Competition (Honorary Mention)

Roth, Linus (Violin) - Germany

Tell us about your musical background. Is there any other member in your family who may be musicians? How did you choose to select the instrument?

Both my parents are musicians, my mother is a cello teacher and my father is a an organist and a choir director. I grew up listening to music. One day my mom brought home a little violin that fascinated me. this is how I started the violin.

Tell us about your teachers?
I was always fortunate. My first teacher was great in working with children. She gave me the impression that playing the violin is fun, something I consider highly important for the beginners. When I was 12 years old I got accepted in the pre-college division of the Musikhochschule Freiburg to study with Prof. Nicholas Chumachenco. I started to work on repertoire pieces and play lots of chamber music. At 16, I started my studies with Prof. Bron at the Musikhochschule Leck where I received my Diploma. After 6 years with Prof. Bron, I continued my study with Prof. Ana Chumachenco in Zurich and Munich. She remains my most important teacher and advisor during the last years.

Tell us about your practicing strategy... and selecting your repertoire.
For my recitals, I select the pieces together with my pianist. We feel very comfortable doing this and we select what we feel like performing the most. For concerto performance, usually the management of the orchestra decides the program. For that, I don’t have much choice.

Do you like any other forms of art? such as painting? a favorite writer? Tell us about it.
Indeed I love going to museums, I am a big fan of the French Impressionistic painters.

Do you have a management now? If so, can you tell us who and what is your concert schedule may be in the next 2 years?
I have managements in Germany and Italy. I play about 40 to 50 concerts a year, two thirds are recitals, the rest are with various orchestras. Recently, I recorded my first CD for EMI, which will be released in October 2005 to be promoted internationally. Something I am looking forward to a lot.

What do you do for hobby, if any?
I like to balance my activity with practicing and sports. I run almost every day. Besides that I like good movies and good books.

In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a good performer?
There are many characteristics a performer should possess, but the most important one should be that he or she remains authentic and original and should be able to touch listeners.

Thank you for the interview and all the best wishes for your career.
